Overview of Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s most famous safari destinations, known worldwide for its large elephant herds and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain.
The park lies on the Kenya–Tanzania border and forms part of a larger ecosystem shared with Maasai communities and wildlife conservancies. It is one of the best places in Africa to observe elephants at very close range in their natural habitat.
Amboseli means “salty dust” in Maa language, referring to the dry lakebed that dominates the landscape. Despite its dry appearance, the park is fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro, creating swamps that attract wildlife year-round.
This combination of dry plains and green swamps makes Amboseli one of the most photogenic parks in Africa.
Landscape & Geography
Amboseli is defined by a dramatic contrast between dry dusty plains and lush green swamps fed by underground water from Mount Kilimanjaro.
The park features open savannah grasslands, acacia woodlands, volcanic soils, and seasonal lakes that attract thousands of animals.
On clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro dominates the skyline, creating one of the most iconic safari views in the world.
