Overview of Chyulu Hills National Park

Chyulu Hills National Park is one of Kenya’s most scenic and least explored safari destinations. Located between Amboseli National Park and Tsavo National Parks, it forms part of a critical wildlife corridor supporting elephant migration across southern Kenya.

The hills are of volcanic origin, formed by lava flows that created rolling green landscapes, underground caves, and dramatic ridges stretching across the horizon.

Often referred to as the “Green Hills of Africa,” Chyulu Hills gained international recognition through Ernest Hemingway’s writings and remains one of the most picturesque locations in Kenya.

Unlike traditional safari parks, Chyulu Hills offers a blend of wildlife viewing, hiking, adventure, and breathtaking scenery.

Landscape & Natural Features

The landscape of Chyulu Hills is dominated by rolling green hills, volcanic cones, lava tubes, and grasslands. The hills rise gradually, creating panoramic views across Amboseli plains and Mount Kilimanjaro.

One of the park’s most unique features is its extensive underground lava tube system, including Leviathan Cave — one of the longest lava tubes in the world.

The vegetation ranges from open grasslands to dense forests at higher elevations, supporting diverse wildlife habitats.

On clear days, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, making this park a hidden gem for photographers.
