Description

Elephant Gorge Camp – An Intimate Eco-Luxury Hideaway on the Slopes of Kilimanjaro

Tucked into the rolling foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, just outside Amboseli National Park, Elephant Gorge Camp is a sanctuary for travellers seeking a deep connection with the African wilderness. This intimate, eco-conscious camp is nestled within the private ALOCA (Kimana Group Ranch) Conservancy, a pristine area that borders the legendary Amboseli ecosystem. From almost every corner of the camp, you are treated to sweeping, uninterrupted views of the snow-capped peak of Africa’s highest mountain.

The name “Elephant Gorge” pays homage to the iconic, large-tusked elephants that roam the surrounding plains, and the camp delivers an authentic safari experience that brings you face-to-face with these gentle giants as well as the vibrant Maasai culture. The camp is unfenced, allowing wildlife to wander freely, and is watched over by 24-hour security for peace of mind, creating an atmosphere where luxury and raw nature coexist in perfect harmony.

Whether you are a first-time safari‑goer or a seasoned wildlife photographer, Elephant Gorge Camp provides a stylish, value-packed, and deeply tranquil base for exploring Amboseli National Park’s famous elephant herds, all with the majestic backdrop of Kilimanjaro. The camp is the product of a visionary reimagining of a historic site, once the location of a film crew’s base, now transformed into a boutique safari retreat.

Prime Location – A Private Conservancy at the Foot of Africa’s Roof

Elephant Gorge Camp is situated within the private ALOCA Conservancy on the outskirts of Amboseli National Park, approximately 35 km (a 30–45 minute drive) from the park’s Kimana Gate, the eastern entrance, and 1 km from the Amboseli Airport. Its location on a private conservancy gives you exclusive access to wildlife-rich areas with far fewer vehicles than inside the main park, and allows for the privilege of night game drives and off-road exploration, which are not permitted in the national reserve itself. The camp is around 250 km (a 4.5-hour drive) from Nairobi, or a 45-minute scenic flight from Wilson Airport to the nearby Amboseli Airstrip, followed by a short transfer.

Accommodation – Spacious, Themed Suites with Plunge Pools and Kilimanjaro Views

Elephant Gorge Camp features 5 uniquely themed guest suites (The Artist, The Hunter, The Adventurer, The Bird Watcher, The Moran), 5 new suites, and a two-bedroom family villa, offering a total of approximately 11–12 exclusive units, ensuring a highly private and personal safari experience.

Guest Suite (5 units): Spacious, ground-level suites built of stone and wood, blending seamlessly into the landscape. Each features floor-to-ceiling windows framing the waterhole and Kilimanjaro, a large double or twin beds, a dressing area, and an en-suite bathroom with a double basin, a solar-heated shower, and a bath.

New Suite (5 units): The newly built suites each feature a private plunge pool, perfect for unwinding while soaking in the surrounding landscape, along with a generous lounge area, refined touches throughout, and a private veranda.

Two-Bedroom Family Villa (1 unit): Two en-suite bedrooms (one king, two queens) with a shared lounge, private plunge pool, and spacious patio. Sleeps up to 4 guests, perfect for families or small groups.

All accommodations feature private verandas, spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Amboseli plains, and the camp is unfenced, giving guests a thrilling, immersive experience.

Dining – Gourmet Meals Overlooking a Wildlife Waterhole

The double-storey main area capitalises on the vistas, sitting just above the buffalo thorn tree line. Step inside to an open-plan lounge built around a natural lava rock formation, with colourful cushions, intimate seating areas, a broad deck, and a well-stocked bar. The dining room glows with colourful place settings, warm lighting at nightfall, and starlit, alfresco dining if you fancy. Gourmet meals are prepared with fresh, locally sourced and organic ingredients, including produce from the camp’s own organic herb and vegetable garden.

The camp offers a variety of special dining experiences to elevate your stay. You can enjoy a bush breakfast in the heart of the wilderness, indulge in a sundowner cocktail at a scenic viewpoint, or have a private starlit dinner in the bush under the African sky. The open-air restaurant and lounge overlook a vibrant waterhole, where you can watch elephants, giraffes, zebras, and other wildlife come to drink while you enjoy your meal.

Amboseli is world-renowned for its giant elephant herds, including the legendary “super tuskers” — massive bulls with tusks that weigh over 100 pounds each. The park is one of the best places on earth to observe these magnificent animals in their natural habitat, often with the towering silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop.

Elephant Gorge Camp offers a variety of expertly guided activities, led by local Maasai guides with intimate knowledge of the land and its inhabitants.

  • Game Drives (Included in most packages): Morning and afternoon game drives in custom 4×4 safari vehicles into Amboseli National Park and the private ALOCA Conservancy. Early-morning drives are timed for sunrise over Kilimanjaro, when the mountain’s peak is often clear and wildlife is most active.

  • Night Game Drives (Included in most packages): A unique privilege of staying in a private conservancy, offering a thrilling opportunity to spot elusive nocturnal predators like leopards, hyenas, civets, and serval cats.

  • Guided Bush Walks & Walking Safaris (Included): Explore the bush on foot with an armed Maasai guide, learning about animal tracks, medicinal plants, insects, and the smaller wonders of the ecosystem.

  • Hot Air Balloon Safari (Extra Cost): For an unforgettable perspective, soar above the Amboseli ecosystem at sunrise for a bird’s-eye view of the park, the game, and the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. Followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush.

  • Maasai Cultural Village Visit (Extra Cost): Immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the Maasai people with a visit to a local manyatta (village). Learn about their dance, beadwork, and semi-nomadic way of life.

  • Birdwatching: With over 400 species recorded in the Amboseli ecosystem, including bee-eaters, kingfishers, African fish eagles, martial eagles, and pygmy falcons, the camp is a birder’s paradise.
