Samburu Simba Lodge – Your Riverside Base for Samburu’s Special Five
Perched on the banks of the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River where crocodiles bask and elephants cross the water at dusk, Samburu Simba Lodge offers a front-row seat to one of Kenya’s most captivating northern ecosystems. This well‑established, 4‑star safari lodge is located in the Buffalo Springs National Reserve, a protected area adjacent to the more famous Samburu National Reserve. The property is just across the river from Samburu, giving you access to two reserves from a single, comfortable base.
The lodge consists of seven villa‑style buildings, housing a total of 70 spacious ensuite rooms and 18 cottages. These are spread across the property and built to maximise the sweeping views of the river and surrounding plains. The ground floor rooms offer easy access to the pathways, while the upper floor rooms provide elevated views of the surrounding landscape. Each room is tastefully furnished with décor drawing inspiration from local Samburu culture and features a private balcony or terrace, a reading desk, an overhead fan, mosquito nets, and tea & coffee making facilities. Ensuite bathrooms are standard and well‑appointed, and each room has a small balcony perfect for quiet wildlife watching from your room.
Dining and Facilities
The lodge’s central dining room serves hearty international and local fare, often as a buffet, and can accommodate special dietary requirements. The poolside bar is a popular spot for sundowners, and the Ibis Pub offers a more relaxed setting with a pool table and darts board. The main restaurant and bar are open‑plan with great views of the surrounding plains. To unwind after a morning game drive, the lodge features two outdoor swimming pools where you can cool off while watching elephants amble past at the water’s edge. For guests needing extra relaxation, there is a massage parlour on‑site. Evening displays of traditional Samburu dance are offered for cultural entertainment.
Wildlife and Activities
Samburu Simba Lodge is a prime base for exploring the unique wildlife of the Samburu ecosystem. The reserve is famous for the “Samburu Special Five” – the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk (giraffe‑necked antelope), and beisa oryx – species found almost nowhere else on earth. Beyond these, the river system supports large herds of elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalos, hippos, crocodiles and over 350 bird species. Expertly‑guided game drives are conducted in custom 4×4 vehicles into Buffalo Springs Reserve and the neighbouring Samburu National Reserve. Guests can also enjoy guided nature walks, birdwatching, and cultural visits to a Samburu village to learn about their vibrant traditions and beadwork.
